I recently found this recipe in Grandpa’s handwriting on a scrap of paper in our archives. Wonder how he came to write down a recipe for homemade Play-Doh? One never knows when a hurricane will result in the need for old-fashioned toys.
Thanks to IHeartNaptime’s blog (best name ever) for helpful modifications.
2 cups white flour
3/4 cup salt
4 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 cups water
4 tablespoons vegetable oil
several drops of food coloring
Mix flour, salt, and cream of tartar in a large saucepan. Add water, oil, and food coloring to the saucepan.
Cook and over moderate heat, stirring constantly until the dough begins to thicken and form into a ball. Take out of pan and form into a ball. Allow to cool slightly and knead (“nead” in Grandpa’s recipe) until smooth.
Store in plastic bag.
